Peter Peacock MSP comments on local government workers’ industrial action

19 August 2008

Commenting on the strike by local government workers across the north today, Peter Peacock, regional Labour MSP for the Highlands and Islands said:

"Any disruption to public services is to be regretted.

"Thankfully the Unions have agreed emergency cover arrangements.

"However, the strike shows the depth of feeling among local government workers.

"Council workers are feeling the real effect of the massive financial squeeze the SNP government have forced on local councils.

"As well as causing cuts to vital education and social work services, we now have disruption to all our Council services.

"It is a clear responsibility of government to make sure local councils have enough cash to maintain our vital public services and in that regard the SNP government are failing.

"In little over a year in office they have forced council workers onto the streets to take action not seen for years and years.

"I hope the Government, Councils and the Unions can resolve their differences quickly and we can see an end to this action."
