Threat to Vestas in Campbeltown

15 August 2008

Commenting on breaking news of the potential closure of Vestas in Campbeltown, Labour MSP for the Highlands and Islands said, Peter Peacock said,

"The closure of Vestas with the loss of such a large number of jobs would be a huge blow to the local economy.

"The announcement coming on the day the company announced major expansion plans elsewhere will sicken workers in Campbeltown.

"The government need to demonstrate their commitment to this plant by pulling out all the stops to save it and to let it share in an expanding European market for wind turbines.

"Manufacturing ought to have a strong place in the Highlands and Islands economy and the renewables sector is a growing market in which the Highlands and Islands should be leading, and should not be on the losing end of new investment."
