Stornoway Black pudding : update

14 October 2008

Peter Peacock has written to all the Stornoway Butchers producing black pudding last week and his office has spoken to all of them.

They are enthusiastic about exploring protected geographical status and there will be further discussion shortly.

His office has been researching the criteria for protected status and will be sharing that research with the butchers and others shortly.

His office will be in touch with the Council and HIE to seek their support for efforts to pursue protected geographical status.

A large number of people saw the story which was covered nationally by a number of newspapers and the BBC.

There has been a very positive reaction to the story and he has received a number of messages of support.

Peter Peacock said, "There appears to be great support for taking this initiative forward.

"From the messages I have had, the wider public are really interested in the idea too.

"My colleague Labour MSP for the Highlands and Islands, Rhoda Grant, is a native of Stornoway, and we shall give every assistance we can to keep the matter moving forward."
