Raasay Post Office saved

Following a campaign by MSP Peter Peacock over the future of the isolated island post office in Raasay, news has come through that the facility is to be safeguarded.

Peter Peacock, Labour regional Highlands and Islands MSP commented, "This is excellent news for the community on Raasay.

"I shared the surprise of the island sub-postmistress that the local post office was initially in the group of post offices being looked at for possible closure.

"However, I am delighted that common sense has prevailed as the nearest post office from Raasay is at Broadford.

"The local post office also provides an essential service to the islanders and its loss would have been a considerable blow.

"If we are to sustain population levels in areas such as Raasay we must protect the existing infrastructure and today’s news is most welcome."
